The first cargo to be delivered to the Moon was two spheres made from stainless steel, with the diameters of 90mm and 150mm, sent by the USSR unmanned spacecraft Luna 2 on September 13, 1959.

The spheres were made up of pentagonal pennants, some embossed with the emblem of the USSR and others with the text “USSR January 1959.” Upon Luna 2’s impact with the lunar surface in the area of the Sea of Showers, explosives inside the sphere dispersed the metal pennants in the area of impact.

Since 1959, there have been 36 deliveries of different types of cargo to the Moon made by Space Agencies from the USA, the USSR, China, India, Japan, and the ESA.
