The first artificial Earth satellite was launched by the USSR on October 4, 1957. The code name for the satellite was PS-1 (Basic Elementary Satellite). The Satellite was launched from spaceport Baikonur Cosmodrome on a Sputnik Rocket, built on the bases of an R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile.
